ABOUT

DANIEL KAHN NELSON

CALIFORNIAN
A San Diego Salutation to all my Comrads and Cohorts.
I was born and raised in San Diego, California. Its my true home. To this day, whenever I stand on Spring Oak Way in Paradise Hills, I feel as if I’m standing on hallowed ground. It is truly a mystical and sacred place for me as I stand in the presence of the great Mount St. Miguel that casts its magical shadow over Chula Vista. A place the chronicles a grand collection of my most treasured times with my family and friends.

MARTIAL ARTIST
I love the Martial Arts. I’ve studied Tae Kwon Do, Karate, and Kung-Fu. At one point I was training for national competition. I began my studies back in 1989 under the late 10th Dan Supreme Grandmaster, James A Wilson who taught me to channel my strength. I would later transfer to Sidekicks Martial Arts Academy to train at under Grandmaster Maurice Orange who would teach me the true meaning of toughness, character, and stamina. When I moved to Macon, Georgia; I attended Ahn's Fitness Center where I started training under Grandmaster Eung Choon Ahn. He taught me the importance of perfecting good form, precision, and strong spirit.

VISUAL ARTIST
For as long as I can remember; I have always been an artist. I hold an Associates in Studio Art and Art History. For the first half of my academic life, I was a performing arts student and later, an Art Major. It later became my minor but I still hold a strong drive and passion for it. Of all the various types of medium I’ve dabbled in, Pencil Drawing has always been my primary medium. I’ve enjoyed working with ink, standard watercolor, gouache, clay, and oil paints. From time to time I will step away from the camera and start a new project. I’m hoping to be able to showcase some of my work on this page for your enjoyment.

FILMMAKER
During my time at Macon State College in 2005, I took a digital storytelling class and gained a passion for making films. I soon found myself signing up for both of the production courses which let me to creating a full length film pieced together from several shorts I had made during the course of these class assignments. The film was titled “Bad Day Funk” and it could be best described as an experimental foray into the depths of shot composition theory. I would later attend Georgia State University where I enrolled in the Film and Video curriculum and directed several short films and various show concepts. Over the course of 10 years I would go on to direct 5 feature length films that include Big Smokey & The Shankers, Danger Dance, and Broken. Some of these films were screened at the Historic Douglass Theatre in Macon, Georgia.

BACKYARD WRESTLER
I've been serious professional wrestling fan since middle school and that eventually led me to take part in an age old fan subculture. Backyard Wrestling has always been something I have loved to do. I spent over 20 years in the sport exploring its various styles and production methods. Its an awesome performance art that brings together amazing people from all walks of life to depict epic battles and feuds between characters they create for themselves. It is an underrated and ridiculed practice that is.. in truth, an ingrained tradition in American culture as a whole. Its one of my top 3 favorite contact sports and I've have found it to be one of the greatest highs anyone could ever experience. My ring name was “The California Kid” and I worked stiff... really stiff. I was the guy who would utilize mostly Japanese holds and maneuvers to drop opponents on their heads and necks. In most cases, I would employ a mix of heel tactics via the use of a valet or manager to prolong the match and inflict more punishment on my opponents. I competed in just about all of the Georgia backyard promotions as well as some in the surrounding southern states. I did win the GWC Championship from “Da King” T-3 in 2010 at a Fan’s Choice show. In addition to competing, I’ve also worked has lead video editor for most of my run and lead commentator. I’ve also worked as a commentator, announcer, timekeeper, and camera operator at a host of various Georgia independent promotions.

TV | MEDIA PRODUCTION ASSISTANT
In addition to the various types of employment I’ve had, the majority of it tells the tale of a young hungry hopeful trying to land a salaried position at a major broadcaster. In days of this madcap pursuit, I had the distinct honor to intern, freelance, and later work at CNN, GPB, FOX 24, MSCTV, GSTV, and Turner Broadcasting. During these intervals I worked as a production assistant, camera operator, teleprompter, set builder, transcriber, tape archive specialist, tape runner, audio assistant, audio board operator, broadcast dj, and on-air talent. Sadly, I’ve yet to land that big job but fortunately much greater opportunities came my way.

CULINARY CONNOISSEUR
Plain and simple... I love food. When I eat good food, I take the time to recognize the many facets of its aroma, taste, and texture. I savor the acidity, the zesty, the sweet, and even the very flavonoids that may comprise the sum umami of a given dish. There was a time when my unrefined self would have told you that my favorite type of food is Italian or Mexican, however, ... years of wonderful dining experiences have allowed me to come to realize that while you may have a favorite dish or two; you could never with certainty say that you have an indisputable type of food that you would say is more delicious than anything else. The culinary world is vast and ripe with undiscovered dishes, new preparation methods, styles, and innovations. One who truly loves food, cannot simply stifle themselves by leaving so many wonderful options untried. For me, it matters not if it is a dish from a fast food chain or an extremely refined dish from a 3rd tier Michelin Star restaurant; If is delicious, I will review it and provide you with the most honest and detailed review on the deliciousness of that dish.
